Aloha! Hawai'i Council for the Humanities strives to promote a better understanding of and appreciation for the humanities among the general public in Hawai'i by supporting historical, philosophical, and cultural programs that encourage people to exchange ideas and engage in civic dialogue.

Hawai‘i History Day

Hawai‘i History Day builds life-long critical thinkers through research and project-based learning.

History Day

Hawai‘i History Day brings history into the classroom for students grades 4 through 12 as they do research into primary sources and interpret them to develop essays, displays, documentaries, living-history performances, and websites.

MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD®

Motheread/Fatheread® Hawai‘i is a nationally acclaimed family literacy program aimed at promoting literacy and increasing communication within families. It improves reading skills so children can be more successful in school and become better readers, thinkers, learners, and problem solvers.  It also strengthens ties between parent and child.

GRANTS

Each year the HCH awards more than $150,000 in grant funds to individuals as well as nonprofit organizations and public institutions throughout the state to support activities that apply the humanities—such as history, philosophy, ethics, religious studies, literary studies, art history, and anthropology—to our everyday lives.

PARTNERSHIPS

The Hawai‘i  Council for the Humanities has used We the People grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, a Teaching American History Grant in partnership with the Hawai‘i  State Department of Education, and other grants to facilitate partnerships and collaborations.
